DeVotchKa A Mad & Faithful Passage words by Elliot Cole photos by Randy Cremean The life of a musician is intrinsically nomadic, characterized by nights of sleeping on hardwood floors, traversing moonlit highways, and nursing cheap drinks. Lesser bands fall apart under the weight of this variable instability. DeVotchka, on the other hand, thrives on it. In fact, DeVotchka’s entire existence is distinguished by its propensity for travel, be it navigating road maps or crossing through the countless genres (and continents) that influence the band’s sound. It’s fitting that DeVotchka’s music has been labeled “gypsy-infused indie rock”, because the Denver-based group is musically ingrained in an itinerant gypsy lifestyle.
