The idea that musical trends move in cycles requires no critical validation. Be it Clapton or Zeppelin playing the blues in the mid 1970s, the Strokes-led garage rock resurgence of the early 2000s, or the rebirth of angular guitars and post-punk attitude that followed, these artists have two things in common: an ear to the past and the revivalist spirit to change the styles of the present.
