Music and film have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship since the early 20th century. If one were to think about the pure function of music – or its absence – throughout any film, it would become clear that it fundamentally bolsters the natural ebb and flow of a storyline. Therein resides the dynamism of music; everything from orchestral or ensemble pieces to a simple, monophonic melody underscores the significance of key moments or provides insight into the minds of characters. The score intensifies the emotional experience for audience members, thereby connecting them—either for better or worse—to the story and creating a relatability that affects each person differently.
