Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

words and photos by Michael Marshall

To experience new songs from Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros' new album, Here, live, and in the beloved independent record store known as Grimey's in Nashville, TN, was something I will cherish for years.  To experience it with my 14 year old son, Connor, made it unforgettable.

With the full band performing a very scaled-down, brief acoustic set, the lucky audience witnessed something unique.  This was not the grand show the crowd would experience that night at the legendary Ryman Auditorium. This was twelve friends in a cramped space, living out the songs collectively but also as individuals, and it was clear that they whole-heartedly believed in and truly loved every note of every wonderful tune.  The present-day "greatest show on earth" would follow a few hours later.  And it was really amazing!  There was such a contrast between the two performances and I will always wonder which the band enjoyed more, and which one I did.

Songs played:

I Don’t Want to Pray
That’s What’s Up
One Love to Another
Man on Fire
