Midnight Matinee, Brass Bed's freshman effort, is a solid rock album that frequently rises above the fray with demonstrations of the band's tremendous range and refusal to be pigeon-holed. They pass with ease from gravelly, Pavement-esque, uptempo ditties like "Olivia" to twee morsels like "James Fellows Jr" to earnest piano ballads like the standout "Make Me Cry", with plenty of interesting stops along the way. Brass Bed occasionally falters when they try to do too much, like during the cacophonous interludes of "Killer Bees", but the album as a whole is as promising a debut as any this year.
