This Week In Shows: 8/13-8/19By Elliot Cole It's a relatively quiet week in Austin, but fear not, we're still bringing you the best of the best. And with ACL just around the corner, things are about to get pretty damn exciting. Friday, August 15th Black Joe Lewis & The Honey Bears@ The Parish: Fresh off a stint at this year’s Lollapalooza, the 26 year-old soul man returns home to Austin for a Friday date at The Parish, bringing in tow all the horns, six strings, and blues revival that can be packed onto a stage. With a sincerity-laden and experienced sound, Lewis’ crooning belies his age, compacting decades of the genre’s history into his own voice. Dabbling in rock ‘n’ roll, jazz, blues, soul, and whatever the hell he wants, it becomes evident that Black Joe Lewis can do whatever he wants to. Saturday, August 16th CEX @ Emo’s: On a quiet Austin Saturday night, we’ll take CEX. Or, uh, have CEX. Watch CEX? Whatever. We just know that we dig the glitchy, laptop heavy, over-the-top hip-hop. His creative and occasionally comical freestyles mix well with an entertaining live set. CEX may not be for everyone…wait, what am I saying…CEX is definitely for everyone! Sunday, August 17th A Place to Bury Strangers w/The Boxing Lesson @ Emo’s: Somehow, The Boxing Lesson seems to finagle their way onto this list on a near weekly basis. This time around they open A Place to Bury Strangers, who has been anointed the “loudest band” in Brooklyn. Unleashing a cacophonous form of shoegaze isn’t easy, but the band manages to warp the Jesus & March Chain blueprint by adding a guitar-driven, idiosyncratic edge. With effects and custom amps at the ready, it’s probably best that you bring the earplugs. Monday, August 18th Bitter:Sweet@The Parish: Our friends at Chillville present the pop/trip-hop duo Bitter:Sweet. The electronic group has garnered huge buzz in their two-year existence, landing the group on commercials and movies. While their name sounds like a dessert recipe, the sound itself cooks up an ethereal, pop-savvy atmosphere. Tuesday, August 19th James Jackson Toth w/The Dutchess and the Duke @ Mohawk: Toth has done away with his “Wooden Wand” moniker, but that hasn’t made his music resonate any less, as evident on his latest album, Waiting in Vain. Still, the treat of the night may be the Seattle duo The Dutchess and the Duke, who was impressive when opening for Fleet Foxes a few months ago. With folky harmonies, his-and-her and a southern drawl, the pair is porch-sitting music of the South dipped in the Pacific Northwest. It equates to a gorgeous, authentic, and organic sound. _____________________________________________
