Show Listings: August 14-19 by Caitlin Caven Here's the unfortunate thing about this week, which seems to be a common theme among Philadelphia shows: there will be a long stretch of music-related blank space, then a high concentration of fantastic things. Use Wednesday/ Thursday to catch up on your correspondence, and consider this weekend an exercise in decisiveness. Friday, Aug. 15th Danger Danger Gallery's 3rd Anniversary festival, day 1: featuring Human Host, Height, The Extraordinaires, Little Trooper, Trtl Soup, Mega Mega, Crime Novels, That Ghost, Neg-Fi, Normal Erection, Intergalactic Incense Burners. Celebrate the 3rd anniversary of everyone's favorite West Philly concert house! Saturday, Aug. 16thBodies of Water, Port O'Brien at Johnny Brenda's. Bodies of Water has stolen the hearts of two of our core staff members; I am of weak constitution, so I am throwing my support to this show on their behalf. With Port O'Brien, who make music that is sometimes poignant, often catchy, and always engrossing. (And that's my own opinion.) Danger Danger Gallery's 3rd Anniversary festival, day 2: with Ethan Master of the Hawaiian Ukulele, Reverse X Rays, Hot Guts, Ear Pwr, Forensic Teens, Bunnies, Future Islands, Northern Liberties, Electric Bucket, Algebra of Need. So many bands! Such a high concentration of awesome! Sunday, Aug. 17thThe New Frontiers at Northstar Bar. Dallas-based The New Frontiers, as their name might suggest, do a tightly constructed nouveau-folk thing, and do it very well. Even if you don't particularly gravitate to country/folk, their live show has a good chance of making your knees weak.
The Faint (pictured above) at the Trocadero. If electro freak-outs and strobe lights are more your style (not to mention high school scenesters), head to The Trocadero to catch The Faint. You'll likely end up covered in sweat, yours or otherwise. Monday, Aug. 18Titus Andronicus at the Barbary. Titus Andronicus are, for lack of a better term, absolutely nuts. They were here three weeks ago, and are heading back through at the tail end of their extensive US tour. They are a fantastically volatile combination of too many dudes in too small a space; this show will knock you flat, Monday night or no. |
